Master of Science (Management Science)
The Master in Management Science teaches analytical methods in a business
context. It combines general concepts from management, business practice, and
business communication with the analytical skills required in Operations Research,
Stochastic Modelling, Data Analysis, and Information Systems.
Management Science uses mathematical models and analytical methods to help make
better business management decisions at all levels - strategic, tactical and operational.
The management scientist's mandate is to use rational, systematic and scientific
techniques to inform and improve decisions in sectors including finance and banking,
telecommunications, energy and natural resources, healthcare planning and medical
therapies, transportation and logistics, manufacturing and defence.
Course structure
Core discipline subjects
(62.5 points)
Students must undertake the five core subjects listed:
Elective discipline subjects
(37.5 points)
Students must undertake three of the following subjects:
- Supply Chain Management
- Project Management
- Enterprise Systems
- Decision Support using ICT
- Data Warehousing
- Evolutionary and Neural Computation
Professional Tools
(87.5 points)
Students must undertake the following seven core Professional Tools subjects:
- Business tools
- Science tools
- Communication tools
Industry project
(12.5 points)
Delivery mode and duration
This is a 2 year full-time course, and is available part-time. All program subjects are delivered on-campus (Parkville).
Entry requirements
A Bachelor degree in an appropriate discipline including mathematics, statistics and operations research, engineering, information
technology, computing, commerce or business, with at least H3 (65%) in the major or equivalent.
